J. Russell George was born in Moose Jaw on January 26, 1928, attended school in Saskatoon graduating from Nutana High School. He continued his education for one year at the Royal Military College in Kingston and two years at the University of Saskatchewan.

He articled to I.W. Tweddell and A. Webster and received his Saskatchewan Land Surveyors Commission # l62 on May 19th, 1959. At that time he was with the firm of Stewart & Phillips. Later in 1959 he became associated with Kent Phillips & Associates and in 1962 the firm was changed to George, Nicholson. Franko & Associates Limited which it remains until this day. His honesty and integrity to his confrères, clients, and associates has been his trademark during his entire business and professional career.

Russell and his beautiful wife Jeanie, have four children – Jim, Don, Doug and Shirley, all happily married and raising families of their own. This in itself would be sufficient for recognition as a Life Member, however the preceding is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

Since receiving his Commission Russ George served on every Committee in the Association as well as being Vice President in 1964, President in 1965 and again in 1980. He served many years on the University of Saskatchewan’s Board of Examiners for Land Surveyors and was Acting Chairman of that Board for three years. He represented our Association at all the formative meetings of the Canadian Council of Land Surveyors and in 1976 he was the founding President of that organization. He was Saskatchewan’s representative during the formative years of the Western Canadian Board of Examiners for Land Surveyors and was the first representative on the Board from Saskatchewan as well as the first Chairman from Saskatchewan. He served on the Board for 10 years having resigned in the Spring of 1989.

Russ retired from the firm of George Nicholson, Franko in December of 1990 and is with us today as he has been at every Annual Meeting of this Association since receiving his Commission in 1954.

Gentlemen, I know of no other Individual in this Association who is more deserving of Life Membership than J. Russell George and who has devoted more time and energy for the betterment of not only our Association but indeed all of Canada. I therefore urge you to support this Motion in order to repay Mr. George, in some small way, for his faithful and dedicated years of service to the Saskatchewan Land Surveyors’ Association and to the surveying profession In Canada.
