R. Alan Webster, S.L.S. was born, raised and educated at Elbow, Saskatchewan, where he was active in sports as well as community activities. He spent several years in the scout fraternity becoming one of the last King Scouts. Al served in active duty for the Canadian Armed Forces during World War II and was discharged in the spring of 1946. From 1948 to 1952 he attended the College of Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan. In April of 1952 Al joined the survey firm of Phillips, Stewart and Phillips, articled to Ian Tweddell and obtained Saskatchewan Land Surveyors Commission #131 in 1955.

In the spring of 1957 Al joined in a partnership with John H. Webb forming a survey company under the name of Webb & Webster Limited. This was a successful joint venture which continued until 1984 with the retirement of Mr. Webb, and Al continued on as President of Webster Surveys Ltd. until 1993.

Al has served on every committee of the Saskatchewan Land Surveyors’ Association, was the Chairman of several conferences and was elected President in 1964. He was the Association’s Representative on the Advisory Council for the College of Engineering. and has been active in the CIS, serving as Chairman of the Saskatchewan branch for several years. In 1994 he had the honour of becoming a Life Member.

In the spring of 1952 Al married Dorothy Bassett. They were blessed with two children, a son, Bob, and a daughter Leslie. Bob became a Professional Engineer as well as a Saskatchewan Land Surveyor, Leslie is a Computer Technician. They have three grandchildren, Evan, Robbie and Lauren.

Al’s personal activities over the years include Membership in the Saskatoon Rotary Club, Saskatoon Elks Club, the Community Planning Association of Canada, Member of the Municipal Planning Commission in Saskatoon, and First Vice-President of Gyro International.
