George Nelson Bennett was born in Gull Lake and raised on a farm near Simmie in south-west Saskatchewan. He attended Luther College in Regina and studied Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. He commenced his surveying career in 1947 with the Provincial Government serving with the Department of Natural Resources, the Department of Highways and the Chief Surveyors’ Office.

George signed his Articles of Agreement with Abraham I. Bereskin, Controller of Surveys on December 9, 1948 and received Commission #109 on May 15, 1952.

In 1952 he was employed by R. S. Galloway Surveying Services Ltd. and the following year set up his own practice. He received D.L.S. Commission #796 on May 25, 1953. He continued in private practice and was an active member of the Association for 41 years until going in the retirement category on January 15, 1993.

During his surveying career George articled four students who became Saskatchewan Land Surveyors. They are D. Babiuk, D. Meneley, W. Stockton and N.S. Whitley. His service to the Association included many years on the Executive and various committees serving as President in 1957. He was a member of the Canadian institute of Survey & Mapping and a life member of the American Congress of Surveying and Mapping. He was awarded life membership in the SLSA in 1994.

In addition to his surveying career, George was active as a developer in Maui as well as in the travel agency business. He was a Mason, King Hiram Masonic Lodge #104, an avid sailor, hunter, fisherman and a past Director of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. George was survived by his wife, Barbara, two daughters Susan ( Don Wilson) and Cheryl (Glen Unser) both of Edmonton Alberta, one son Stephen (Krysia) of Ottawa and four grandchildren.

His quiet dignity and sense of humour will he missed by all who knew him.
