Arthur Edward Glover

(1887.03.04 – 1966.10.24)
B.A.Sc, SLS, ALS, DLS
Commission #042
(1912.04.15)

Arthur was born on March 4, 1888 to James and Elizabeth Glover in Beaverton, Ontario.

“His primary education was received at Beaverton public school, and later he learned a few thing at Orillia Collegiate. In the fall of 1904 he entered the School with the ’07 class, but after his first year, Art decided to obtain some practical experience, so he spent two years railroading and land surveying before returning to complete his course. He has consistently shown the practical, self-reliant character evolved from practical training, and has sought no offices and received none, and taken a good standing in the class lists. He has bright prospects for a career of usefulness in his chosen profession, so his fellow students will follow his progress.” Arthur graduated and did post-graduate studies to obtain his Civil Engineering degree, B.A.Sc. from the University of Toronto. In the university publications they show Glover 1909 working in Calgary and when he received his degree they list him in Edmonton.

Arthur received his ALS (1911), DLS (1911) and SLS (1912). He did a handful of plans in Saskatchewan between 1912-1913; a handful of CLS plans 1918-1919; and his township work in Saskatchewan was done 1911-1918; all of which were done out of Edmonton.

In 1912 he was part of the firm Glover & Buchanan (Canadian Senator 1959-1965) in Edmonton. This partnership ended in 1916. From 1916 -1920, Arthur is listed as a Dominion Land Surveyor in the city directories.

In 1922 Arthur and his family immigrated to Portland, Oregon in the USA. We will assume that it wasn’t long after his arrival to Portland that he found employment with the U.S. Forest Service (Dept. of Agriculture).  While working there in 1939, he was asked to take charge of all the projects in Alaska. He moved up to Alaska in 1940. Research shows there are a lot of different articles authored by Arthur while he was employed in Alaska and back in Portland. In WW2 he aided in his capacity as an Engineer with the Forest Service in a lot of projects. In 1946 Arthur returned to Portland until his disability retirement in 1953.

Arthur was married to Ruby Ruth Glover and they had one child John. Arthur passed away October 24, 1966.

“Glover Lake (2-15-75-9-W4M; 55°30’N 111°18’W; approximately 90 Km north north-east of Lac La Biche) is named after A.E. Glover, DLS, ALS, working in the area in 1918.”
